2K Moulding Concept

Table of Contents

2k injection moulding is a type of plastic injection moulding process that uses a two-shot moulding design to produce a single part. It’s beneficial in the manufacturing industry because it eliminates the need for painting and post-moulding operations while still producing a high-quality, consistent product. This plastic moulding technology blends two materials (or two different colours) into one plastic part by using the 2k injection moulding machine.

These tools are ideal for creating products in the medical and automotive industries due to their precision and functionality. But you’ll also see products created by 2k moulds in your everyday life, like toothbrushes.

2k injection moulding is favoured for its ability to meet narrow functions and appearance requirements. Parts might need to be water resistant, dust-proof, and drop-resistant, as well as using multiple colours for additional aesthetic features.

Sino has nearly 20 years of plastic moulding experience and is equipped with comprehensive moulding machinery in our Shenzhen factory, including 2K Injection moulding technology. Our selection of skilled technicians and knowledge about injection moulding allows us to create any volume of products to a high quality. How Does it work?

The 2k injection moulding process uses two types of plastics that are loaded into the injection mould. A rigid plastic, such as polypropylene, and a more elastic version, such as a TPE. By blending two types of plastic, the resulting material becomes more versatile. This approach enhances the strength of the components and allows for more intricate designs.

To simplify this process even further, the first injection acts as the base of the product and the second injection creates a feature/ main component of the final product. Each stage of 2k injection moulding requires adequate cooling time to ensure that the bonds solidify correctly, and reduce the chance of defects. Any cracks, leaks, or deformations will affect the functionality of the final product, and if it is market-ready, or results in material waste.

One of the most important factors is the mould design, it must consist of two separate cavities to hold each material as well as account for extras, in case of over-moulding or inserts.

What are the benefits of 2k Injection Moulding?

Cost Reduction – 2K injection moulding can produce complex parts in one machine, this eliminates the need for separate moulds or assembly steps, reducing labour and production costs. Although 2k injection moulds tend to be more expensive than 1k machines, they produce less waste and are a cost-effective long-term investment.

Quality and Precision – The 2k injection moulding process achieves high precision and tight tolerances, making it an ideal choice for creating parts with intricate shapes and sizes, that may be difficult or impossible to achieve with traditional moulding methods.

Combined Materials – Combining materials with varying properties can offer better structural support, improved grip, or soft-touch over moulding.

High Volume Production – 2k injection moulding is a highly repeatable way of producing plastic parts with extremely high precision and intricate designs. This means that large volumes of parts can be created per hour by one machine, without the need for additional assembly support.

2k injection moulding offers a range of benefits that make it an indispensable process in modern manufacturing. By enabling the integration of multiple materials or colours in a single moulding cycle, it allows for the creation of complex and high-quality parts with enhanced functionality. The method enhances product durability, reduces assembly time, and improves production efficiency, leading to cost savings and consistent quality.
